How to Restore a Used Car to Its Best Running Condition

So how can you go about restoring a used car to its best running condition?  First you will need some basic mechanical understanding, some basic auto tools, an afternoon, a little money and a Chilton or Haynes manual for your vehicle.  Once you have these things then you are ready to begin the process of getting your car running, if not as good as new, as close as your vehicle can get.

Let's start under the hood.   The first thing that you need to do is clean the engine, when I say this I literally mean to clean the engine.  Go to a manual car wash and open your hood.  On the machine that is on the wall that controls all the different functions look for a button that says engine bright or engine wash and press it. Out of the spray wand will start flowing a thick, creamy foam that is a combination of degreaser and mild soap.  Cover the entire engine with this, taking care not to get it on the battery or the distributor cap.  After a few minutes of this material sitting on the engine, spray it off with the "spot free rinse" function of the wand.  This is a much lower pressure water flow and will reduce the chance of flooding of the engine.  Even so once everything is clean pull off (you may need to push the car out of the bay if it doesn't readily start) and let it sit in the sun with the hood up to dry out the compartment for an hour or so before trying to drive. The reason you want a clean engine, is to not only make it easier to work with and inspect, but to also reduce the amount of gunk on it that can lead to overheating.

Now that the engine is clean, take the time to inspect every hose, vacuum line, wire and belt that you can see under the hood.  These items should all be clean and flexible and not have any obvious cracks or peeling.  If the hoses and lines all look good but are just a little aged, take the time to wrap them with hose tape as a precaution in case they might fail later without warning.

Next you will want to do a tune up, this is not as hard as people tend to think, This is just the process of replacing the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotor button, battery clamps, battery cables, air, fuel and oil filters, changing the oil and transmission fluid, topping off the power steering and brake fluids, and getting the battery, starter and alternator tested.  You will also in this process want to check and focus your headlights, replace all fuses and bulbs on exterior safety lights and get your steering aligned.   You may also want to take the car in to have the tires balanced and inspected as well as having the pressure checked.  While this is going on make sure to have someone check out your brakes to make sure they are in good maintenance.

Once you have finished your work, you will have a car that is well on its way to running like it was designed to. You may need to do a few other things, such as running engine cleaning solution through your oil and fuel systems.  These Chemicals can be found at any auto parts store.  Good luck and enjoy your new better running car.
