Old Brass Fire

My teacher loved her hand bell-Mrs. Anderson and her Brass Tea Bell

My favorite teacher was an old school teacher. She did not take any nonsense off anyone! Her name was Mrs. Anderson. She always kept her desk in perfect order. In perfect symmetry she would place her pens, chalk, name plate, water glass and brass tea bell along the edge of her desk. Every morning when she was ready to begin she would ring her brass tea bell to get our attention. It was so beautiful and the sound it made was so pure. It always got my attention. Mrs. Anderson used her tea bell to get our attention every time we got loud or off track.

One day Mrs. Anderson was in the middle of a lesson when a fight broke out in the middle of the classroom. She ran over to the boys to break them up. Unfortunately when she got there, she was kicked really hard in the face by one of the fighting boys. Mrs. Anderson was knocked backwards and she fell over one of the desks. She was knocked unconscious. I was only 8 years old, but I knew I had to get help. I don't really know why, but I grabbed her brass tea belloff her desk and ran to the office. There were so many people in there and I could not get anyone's attention. I took the brass tea belland rang it as hard as I could. Everyone silenced and I was able to get help back down to the classroom.

Mrs. Anderson never fully recovered from her fall. She has a lot of great days where she is just like the Mrs. Anderson that I loved so dearly. Other days she is off on another planet. She gets agitated easily these days. Her family was not able to take care of her. Sadly no one else would stay with her at her home, so she was institutionalized. Now that I'm an adult I do my best to visit her every week. Sometimes she knows who I am and sometimes she doesn't. Her birthday is coming up and I decided to get her a
Brass Tea Bell
. I found one online at a descent price so I ordered it and took it to her.

When I gave Mrs. Anderson the brass tea bellher whole face lit up! She took the bell out of the box and gave it a ring. This is what she said to me, "Every time I ring this bell, I will think of you. You've been like a daughter to me over the years and I don't know what I would have done without you."

I continued to visit with Mrs. Anderson until she passed away last year. I attended her funeral with my husband and my two kids. After the funeral I was asked to stay for the reading of the will. Mrs. Anderson had kept her brass tea bellwith her all those years and rang it every time I came to see her. I suppose it was very fitting that she willed it to me. It was the smallest of items amongst all her possessions given away that day, but it meant more to me than any amount of money or material gifts could have meant. Now I keep the brass tea bellon my mantle and use it to get my family's attention. I think of her every time I use ring it. Pure and beautiful, that was Mrs. Anderson.
