Sydney Electrician Tip: About Smoke Alarms and Why You Need One in Your House
Smoke Alarm has rescued countless people's lives
Smoke alarms are effective warning mechanism that signal people of an impending fire catastrophe. Early this month there were news reports that attest the effectiveness of smoke alarms.
In Waupaca County, Wisconsin, USA, a man managed to avoid the enraging fire after he was awakened by the sound of the smoke alarm. The fire broke out 10 p.m. on Aug. 30. He was alone at home that time. He used a candle for light as his house power is off. After waking up due to the sound of the smoke alarm, he leaped out a first floor window.
In Melbourne, Australia, smoke alarm salvaged the lives of three people from a fire that enraged their single-story house at the evening of September 4.
In London, UK, 2 tenants were able to flee from a burning house early morning of September 8. One of the tenants was alerted by the smoke alarm. Sensing a life-threatening blaze, he went to warn his neighbor in the adjacent building. They both escaped before being overwhelmed by the thick smoke.
These are some of the recent events which acutely emphasize the importance of having operational smoke alarms installed in your abode. Fire safety authorities adjure homeowners to test smoke alarms regularly. A smoke alarm is as significant as a safety switch in your abode.
Four Types of Smoke Alarms
There are different kind of smoke detectors available. They generally fall under 2 basic types: Ionization and Photoelectric. You need to pick what you prefer according to where they should to be installed in your house. They can be used with most smoke alarm systems designed for the deaf. Smoke alarms are kinda costly, yet they save thousands of lives every year.
- Ionization smoke alarms – The most common type of smoke alarms, and seemingly the most affordable too. They signal more quickly when a rapid flaming fire occurs, such as an oil/fat fire from the kitchen. It is a bit less susceptible to a broiling fire when high quantity of smoke is generated.
- Photoelectric (or Optical) smoke alarms – This type of smoke alarm is fleet at sensing blazing fire when smoke is given off before flames occur. They are less sensitized to a blazing fire. They are a bit high-priced, but are becoming more extensively available at do-it-yourself stores.
- Dual sensor smoke alarms – Smoke alarms that integrate both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms.
- Heat detectors – Heat detectors are not sensitive to smoke, but they detect heat. They are perfect for use in kitchens where you don't want cooking fumes to set them off. They are high-priced, and you may not find them available easily as they are not widely used.
Ionization and photoelectric are both great at anticipating different yet could be lethal fires. Because we cannot anticipate what type of fire or where it might start in our homes, it is highly suggested that we install both ionization and photoelectric, or dual sensor smoke alarms.
Smoke Alarm Installation
It is highly suggested to have smoke alarms installed on each part of your home; may it be the hallway, the bedroom, the kitchen, the basement, or the living room. Most dangerous fires happen late at night or early morning. Have your smoke alarms installed at the proper level to alert your as soon as possible of a approaching fire.
